Yusra and her sister escaped the Syrian war and went to find safety in Europe. They travelled through Lebanon to Turkey before traveling to Greece in an overcrowded dinghy.
Not long into the sea crossing, the boat’s engine failed. Yusra, her sister and two others jumped into the waves and swam for three and a half hours in open water to stop their dinghy capsizing, saving the lives of 20 people.
A year later, Yusra’s courage, determination and strong swimming skills were recognized by the International Olympic Committee and she became a member of the first ever Refugee Olympic Team. Yusra competed at the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016.
She aims to compete at the next Olympic Games. Yusra is a Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and works to alter global perceptions of refugees.
Hi Andrew,
ReplyDeleteLeisha here again! :)
You have retold Yusra’s story really well. What she did was very brave, don't you think? I think it is amazing that she, along with her sisters and two others saved the lives of 20 people. She is a true hero.
If you were ever to meet her one day, what one question would you ask her?
Another great post Andrew! I am amazed at your determination to finish the SLJ programme. Ka mau te pai!
