Making A Racket

1. They have agents negotiating deals for them.
2. The 3rd best ever tennis player Djokovic has earned $20 million more than Serena Williams.
3. Venus and Serena Williams are fighting for gender equality.
4. Tennis is apparently quite close in payments for men and women.

One question I would like answered is if men are often paid more because they have more spectators watching their sport and so more money is brought in via ticket sales and views?

  1. Hello again Andrew!

You have learned some really interesting facts about the Williams sisters.

What was the most interesting fact you learned? Were you surprised to hear that Djokovic earned $20 million more than Serena?

I think your question is great! It is a question that relates to a very controversial and often debated topic. There are many that agree that women and men should be paid equal, and many that do not agree. One perspective, like you have identified, is that there are less people who watch women’s sport compared to men’s sport, therefore women playing these sports get paid less as the men have a larger audience. Another perspective is that women haven’t been playing sports for as long as men, and so people are still getting used to watching them. However, we are now starting to see more and more women playing sports professionally. Perhaps we will see a change in pay equality over the next decade. What do you think?

Another great post Andrew! Ka pai!
