The Royal Ranger - The Red Fox Clan by John Flanagan
The second book (The Red Fox Clan) in the Royal Ranger series by John Flanagan is a fictional novel set around the year 643 Common Era. The book has a lot of good themes in it including betrayal.
Dimon is a relative to King Duncan (Princess Cassandra's Father and Maddie's Grandfather), he is captain of the castle guard, well liked and trusted. All of these things make you think that he would be a good person but the law changed so that a female could become ruler of Araluen which meant he could not be king. Dimon schemed to kill Cassandra (next in line to the throne) and to marry Maddie.
Luckily Maddie figured it out just in time and Cassandra has fallen back to the safest place in the castle so hasn't been killed. Yet.
